Bite it! HG's Say Cheese Turkey Burger
HG's Say Cheese Turkey Burger

Turkey Time!

You'd think that turkey burgers would be universally safe to chew, but the version from Denny's reminds us this just isn't so. Ditch the diner variety, and stick with our amazing makeover...

One 100-calorie flat sandwich bun (like Arnold/Brownberry/Oroweat Sandwich Thins)
1/4 cup shredded lettuce
2 tbsp. fresh salsa or pico de gallo
2 tsp. fat-free mayonnaise
1 tsp. BBQ sauce with 45 calories or less per 2-tbsp. serving
1/2 tsp. chipotle pepper sauce (like the kind by Tabasco)
4 oz. raw lean ground turkey
Dash each garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper
1 cup broccoli florets
2 tbsp. shredded reduced-fat Monterey Jack cheese (or a blend with Monterey Jack cheese)
1/2 oz. sliced avocado (about 1/8th of an avocado)

Split bun into halves, and top the bottom half with lettuce and salsa or pico de gallo.

In a small bowl, combine mayo, BBQ sauce, and hot sauce. Mix well.

In a medium bowl, thoroughly mix turkey with seasonings. Evenly form into a patty about 4 inches wide.

Bring a grill pan (or skillet) sprayed with nonstick spray to medium-high heat. Cook patty for 5 minutes.

Meanwhile, place broccoli and 1 tbsp. water in a medium microwave-safe bowl. Cover and microwave for 1 1/2 minutes, or until softened.

Flip patty and cook for 3 minutes. Top patty with cheese and continue to cook until cheese has melted and patty is cooked through, 1 - 2 minutes.

Transfer cheese-topped patty to the bottom half of the bun. Top with sauce mixture, avocado, and the top of the bun. Drain excess water from broccoli, and serve alongside the burger!

Fight it! Denny's Cali Jack Turkey Burger with Broccoli
Denny's Cali Jack Turkey Burger with Broccoli

Get Back, Jack...

HOLD UP. TIME OUT. Can you say deceptive?! This burger meal qualifies as Fit Fare material... but not for its calorie or fat content. The Fit Fare Light items at Denny's have under 550 calories; the Fit Fare Lean picks have under 15g fat. This burger is marked Fit Fare Protein, since it packs in over 20 grams. It also gets the Fit Fare Fiber marking when ordered with broccoli. And while protein and fiber are very nice, we are NOT loving the 750-calorie price tag and 34 grams of fat. Yeesh! The turkey patty alone accounts for 330 calories and 18g fat. And while avocado is excellent and full of healthy fats, there's no need to overdo it, Denny's. We're guessing too much cooking oil and an oversized bun are also to blame for the surprisingly high stats. Make our smart swap at home, and let this be a lesson to us all: It pays to check out menu nutritionals before dining out.
