Hungry Girl Today: 08.18.08

Spotted on Shelves...

New Mini-Wheats - If you're a fan of miniature wheat cereal, YOU are in luck,
friend. Two new options are now in stores -- Frosted Cinnamon Streusel Mini-
Wheats (about 24 biscuits = 180 calories, 1g fat, 44g carbs, 5g fiber --
POINTS® value 3*) and Bite Size Unfrosted Mini-Wheats (about 30 biscuits =
200 calories, 1.5g fat, 46g carbs, 6g fiber -- POINTS® value 3*). Both very
wheaty -- and very delicious!

Kashi Pocket Bread Sandwiches - We told you these were on the way, and
now they're here! In Chicken Rustico, Turkey Fiesta, and Veggie Medley.
Each convenient l'il pocket sandwich contains 270 - 300 calories, 6 - 8g fat,
41 - 49g carbs, and 4 - 6g fiber (POINTS® value 5 - 6*). Like all of Kashi's
stuff, these taste GREAT!

New Amy's Light in Sodium Products - Keep an eye out for even MORE
reduced-sodium offerings from Amy's. There's Shepherd's Pie (160 calories,
4g fat, 27g carbs, 5g fiber -- POINTS® value 3*) and Macaroni & Cheese
(400 calories, 16g fat, 47g carbs, 3g fiber -- POINTS® value 9*). The
Shepherd's Pie is fabulous! And while the Mac & Cheese isn't exactly low-cal,
at least there's less salt! Each of these has just 290mg sodium -- that's over
50% less than the originals!

Dannon Dilemma -- Good News or Bad?! TELL US NOW!

Last week we broke the news about Dannon adding 20 calories to their 6-oz.
Light & Fit yogurt cups. We said it was a GOOD thing because we thought
Dannon's 60-calorie yogurt was, um, not impressive at all, and we think the
new flavor and texture are really an improvement. But apparently, many of
you disagree. We've been barraged with emails from people who are LIVID
about the "new great taste", added sugars, and 20 extra calories. These
complainers (you know who you are!) insist that the "thinner" yogurt was
better and that it's an OUTRAGE that Dannon Light & Fit is back up to 80
calories a serving (it wasn't always 60 calories). We want to get to the
bottom of this. Click here NOW to voice your opinion on this very important
yogurt issue. We MUST know what you think. CLICK, CLICK, CLICK,
people!

All Fibers Are NOT Created Equal!

You may have noticed that EVERYTHING has fiber these days. And lots more
of it. It's not uncommon to find ice cream products with 4 grams of fiber per
serving -- and snack bars with 12 grams of the stuff. It's a little KOOKY! A
recent article in Nutrition Action Healthletter (from our pals at CSPI) points
out some key facts about "high-fiber" foods that have been infused with
isolated fibers, like inulin, maltodextrin, and polydextrose. These fibers are
likely not as beneficial to your health as intact fibers, and they probably
won't lower your cholesterol or blood sugar. Bottom line? As long as you
don't overdo it, these fibers probably won't hurt you (they cause some
people stomach discomfort in large doses). But if you're looking to meet the
RDA of fiber for health reasons, you might want to only count naturally
occurring fibers, like those in whole grains, fruits, and veggies. P.S. The
article doesn't suggest that these isolated fibers contain fully digestible
calories (regular fiber doesn't either), so calorie counts on products that
subtract calories from fiber aren't affected.

The Buzz...

Ooooooh -- here's something fun! If you missed the HG Book Tour, you can
listen to an actual podcast of the Denver book event from The Tattered
Cover RIGHT HERE. Click to hear Lisa's talk and Q & A! And speaking of the
HG book, you can download a printable PDF of the recipe titles and their WW
POINTS® values* by clicking HERE! And you can BUY the actual book HERE
(15 straight weeks on The New York Times Best Sellers list!). ***Think
there's no more yogurt news? WRONG-O! You may have noticed that the
small containers of our favorite fat-free Greek yogurt, Fage Total 0% (Fage
is pronounced "fah-yeh" -- it does NOT rhyme with "cage"), have gone from
80 calories each to 90 (some other stats have changed slightly, too). Well,
guess what? The product itself hasn't changed at all -- the serving size is just
slightly bigger (it went from 5.3 oz. to 6 oz.). Mystery solved! ***Yes, we
sent out a whole Side Dish email a few weeks ago about the new Dunkin'
Donuts "Smart" menu. But we want to stress just how DELICIOUS those Egg
White Flatbread Sandwiches are. We were visiting the East Coast last week
and became obsessed with the Veggie one (290 calories, 9g fat, 39g carbs,
3g fiber -- POINTS® value 6*). SO worth seeking out! YUM! ***Want to burn
more calories while doing your cardio? STAND UP STRAIGHT! Aiming for
better posture challenges your balance, and many experts agree that means
more calories burned. So no slumping! ***You may have heard that there
have been recalls on certain batches of beef due to E. coli concerns. Well
after a recent USDA investigation, the recall was expanded and now includes
over 1.3 MILLION pounds of beef! Click here for all the details. That's all
we've got. HG out!
