Hungry Girl Today: 3.26.09

WEEKLY WEIGH-IN

We've been getting SOOO many requests for HG Ultimate Chewdowns.
(Keep 'em coming!) Today we're tackling all of your chocolate challenges...

Sometimes I absolutely need actual chocolate, not some chocolate-flavored
snack or treat. Are there any chocolate-bar-like items out there that won't
wreck my calorie budget?

Sure... there are TONS of products that give you portion-controlled servings
of real chocolate.

1. If you like super-rich chocolate, there's Hershey's new Extra Dark
Chocolate Assortment of individually wrapped, single-serving squares --
perfect for killing a chocolate-bar craving without breaking open an entire
bar. Each square has around 45 calories and a POINTS® value of 1*, and
there are some fruit-infused flavors that are really good (the pomegranate
one is the BEST).

2. Then there are Hershey's Sticks -- super-skinny bars with 50 - 60 calories
each (POINTS® value 1*) that come in a bunch of varieties, like Caramel
filled Milk Chocolate and Mint Milk Chocolate.

3. If you like dark chocolate (and larger portions!), try a Hershey's 100
Calorie Dark Chocolate Bar in Special Dark (POINTS® value 2*).

4. Trader Joe's also makes a 100 Calorie Chocolate Bar... a MILK chocolate
one (POINTS® value 3*).

5. And check out Sweetriot's new UnBars -- hunks of dark chocolate with
raisins and/or crunchy cacao inside (like modern-day Chunky bars!). Each
UnBar has 180 - 190 calories and 14g fat (POINTS® value 4 - 5*) and lasts a
looooong time. They're not as easy to find as the Hershey's stuff, but they're
worth seeking out if you're candy-bar-obsessed.

I know you're crazy about those VitaTops, but I hate ordering snacks online.
Are there any baked chocolate treats that I can find at the grocery store?

You're right, we do LOVE Vitas... especially the chocolate flavors. But if
you're looking for desserty chocolate items that are stocked at most
supermarkets, there are a few good options.

1. 100 Calorie Packs Oreo Mini Cakesters are great -- circles of soft
chocolate cake with a creamy layer in the middle. The Cakesters are small,
but you get three per pack.

2. If you crave straight-up chocolate cake, you may like Little Debbie 100
Calories Chocolate Cakes with Chocolate Flavored Icing (POINTS® value 2*
each). They're basically teeny tiny servings of real chocolate cake -- it's
quality over quantity with those.

3. Finally, one of Betty Crocker's Warm Delights Minis in Molten Chocolate
Cake is a good way to get 150 calories' worth of gooey chocolate dessert
(POINTS® value 3*).

Pssst... VitaTops ARE popping up at more and more supermarkets. Click
here to see where they're sold, and be sure to look for them in the freezer
aisle!

I like to have a few bites of a really decadent chocolate dessert when I go
out to a restaurant. If I split one with a few friends, it can't be too bad, right?
I figure if I'm sharing with three pals, I'm taking in around 100 calories or so.

Hate to burst your bubble, but you could be taking in THREE TIMES that
amount! P.F. Chang's The Great Wall of Chocolate has 1,440 calories and
61g fat. The Smothered Chocolate Cake at Macaroni Grill has 1,390 calories
and 40g fat. The Molten Chocolate Cake at Chili's has 1,290 calories and 62g
fat, and the Chocolate Chip Paradise Pie has an insane 1,590 calories and
76g fat. Even that seemingly innocent, personal-sized chocolate-brownie
dessert served in a shot glass at Chili's has 400+ calories and 24g fat. (And
it's doubtful you could share that miniature thing with even one other
person!) But perhaps the chocolate dessert with the scariest stats is Outback
Steakhouse's crazy Chocolate Thunder From Down Under dessert -- 2,020
calories!!! Even if you split that with three friends, you're lookin' at around
500+ calories each! Just a friendly HG warning. BTW, we did find ONE
chocolate dessert with reasonable stats -- the Mini Great Wall of Chocolate at
P.F. Chang's, with 150 calories and 5g fat (POINTS® value 3*). Although
considering the stats on the full-sized version, we wouldn't be surprised if
that thing is microscopic.

What are THE BEST chocolate Hungry Girl recipes? Is there anything new on
the way?

There are SO many good chocolate dessert recipes in HG-land. Some of the
classics are...

* Best of My Lava Chocolate Cake
* Death by Chocolate Cupcakes
* Mini Microwave Triple Chocolate Cake
* Chocolate Peanut Butter Fudge

We also really like our hot cocoa creations, like the Sweet 'n Salty Caramel
Cocoa. (Click here for that!) But the BEST chocolate recipe ever is making its
debut in the soon-to-be-released HG cookbook 200 Under 200. It's called the
Double-Trouble Chocolate Trifle, and it is layers and layers of rich chocolatey
goodness! That recipe is a MUST-TRY for all chocolate lovers. (P.S. There are
more than a DOZEN brand-new chocolate-packed recipes in 200 Under 200!)
