Hungry Girl Today: 8.28.09

Both Starbucks and Jamba Juice are now offering a SLEW of healthy food
choices. And not just breakfast foods, either. There are salads, flatbreads,
wraps, and more. Check out what's worth it and what's not...

Starbucks Dark Cherry Yogurt Parfait

PER SERVING (one parfait): 320 calories, 5g fat, 140mg sodium, 58g carbs,
2g fiber, 40g sugars, 11g protein -- POINTS® value 6*

This parfait ROCKS! It has creamy fat-free cherry yogurt, real sweet dark
cherries, and almond-coconut granola (in its own cute little container). The
taste and texture are great. The best part is how the crunchy granola tastes
like the "toasted almond" coating on those Good Humor ice cream bars we
ate (and loved!) as kids. This is a terrific grab & go breakfast/brunch option
from The 'Bucks. Yum! (Heads up! 320 calories may be a tad high for a
snack, so we recommend this as a meal or mini meal.)

HG Bottom Line: Worth it!

Starbucks Marshmallow Dream Bar

PER SERVING (one bar): 210 calories, 4g fat, 250mg sodium, 43g carbs, 0g
fiber, 15g sugars, 1g protein -- POINTS® value 5*

Wow is this thing delicious!!! It's crispy, buttery-tasting, light, marshmallowy,
and completely yummy! It doesn't have fiber or any real nutritional value to
speak of, but you can certainly do a lot worse when it comes to indulgent
snacking. So during a sweets-craving moment, grab this and an iced coffee
(with some nonfat milk and no-calorie sweetener!), and you've got yourself a
satisfying 230-calorie-or-so snack. WE LOVE THIS!!!

HG Bottom Line: SO worth it!

Starbucks Apple Bran Muffin with Omega-3s

PER SERVING (one muffin): 350 calories, 9g fat, 520mg sodium, 64g carbs,
7g fiber, 34g sugars, 6g protein -- POINTS® value 7*

This muffin tastes like winter holidays. It really does. But quite honestly, it's
not worth 350 calories. Think about it: You could have three and a half
VitaTops (or three and a half of the small VitaMuffins) or this ONE muffin.
We'd opt for the Vitas every time. It's not that this is a bad muffin. In fact, it
tastes pretty nice, especially if you like cinnamon and clove. But it's not large
or filling enough to work its way into our lives. Sorry, Apple Bran Muffin with
Omega-3s!

HG Bottom Line: Not worth it!

Starbucks Farmer's Market Salad

PER SERVING (one salad with dressing): 300 calories, 20g fat, 350mg
sodium, 24g carbs, 4g fiber, 16g sugars, 8g protein -- POINTS® value 7*

PER SERVING (one salad without dressing): 220 calories, 12g fat, sodium
n.a., 22g carbs, 4g fiber, sugars n.a., 8g protein -- POINTS® value 5*

Nice work here, Starbucks. Thanks for a creative (and fairly large!) salad,
complete with dressing on the side. People, if you like blue cheese crumbles,
dried cranberries, and apples, you'll dig this. But it's not really satisfying
enough to be eaten as a full meal. In a perfect world, every Starbucks would
also sell 4-oz. skinless chicken breasts right in its little food case -- add one
of those, and this would be the perfect lunch. For now, you may have to eat
it along with a little something else. Or skip the dressing and consider it a
snack.

HG Bottom Line: Worth it... Sorta.

Jamba Juice California Flatbreads

PER SERVING (one flatbread): 250 - 330 calories, 8 - 13g fat, 520 - 700mg
sodium, 35 - 44g carbs, 2 - 6g fiber, 3 - 4g sugars, 10 - 17g protein --
POINTS® value 5 - 7*

These so-called "Flatbreads" should be called "Puff Pizzas," because that's
pretty much what they are. But the biggest issue we have with these things is
that they're super-teeny-tiny! There are four varieties: Tomo Artichoko,
Smokehouse Chicken, MediterraneYUM, and Four Cheesy. They all taste
pretty decent/borderline good, but they're WAY too high in calories for their
size. To improve these, the Jamba crew would have to flatten out the bread
and make 'em bigger and a little crispier. But for now, we're not going to be
partaking in these Flatbreads.

HG Bottom Line: Not worth it!

Jamba Juice Gobble'licious Sandwich

PER SERVING (one sandwich with dijonnaise): 570 calories, 28g fat, 1410mg
sodium, 49g carbs, 2g fiber, 7g sugars, 28g protein -- POINTS® value 13*

PER SERVING (one sandwich without dijonnaise): 420 calories, 14g fat,
1310mg sodium, 47g carbs, 2g fiber, 6g sugars, 28g protein -- POINTS®
value 9*

Everyone here agrees that this sandwich tastes FANTASTIC! The focaccia
bread is AWESOME (as long as you like rosemary) and the turkey is fresh.
With all that flavor, there's really no need for dressing or sauce. It's a great
size and worth the 400-calorie+ price tag. But an extra 150 calories and 14g
fat for dijonnaise is WAY too much, so definitely ditch that stuff immediately.
Again, this one got "yums up" pretty much across the board -- but could its
super-Hungry-Girl-ish name be coloring our opinions?!

HG Bottom Line: Worth it... but ditch the fatty mustard-mayo sauce!

Jamba Juice Chimichurri Chicken Wrap

PER SERVING (one wrap with sauce): 560 calories, 25g fat, 770mg sodium,
67g carbs, 3g fiber, 5g sugars, 22g protein -- POINTS® value 13*

PER SERVING (one wrap without sauce): 410 calories, 9g fat, 710mg sodium,
66g carbs, 2g fiber, 5g sugars, 22g protein -- POINTS® value 9*

Okay, this wrap (along with the others) is deceptively packaged to look WAY
bigger than it actually is. It's a nice size, but the center section of the
package, which is conveniently covered by a label, holds the sauce and not
more of the actual wrap! Hard to explain here, but you'd understand if you
saw it. All in all, this one is pretty good. But without the sauce, it's sorta dull;
and with it, it's sorta fattening. A dilemma! The solution? Skip it!

HG Bottom Line: Not really worth it... but not horrendous, in a pinch.

Jamba Juice Asian Style Chicken Wrap

PER SERVING (one wrap with sauce): 430 calories, 7g fat, 600mg sodium,
72g carbs, 5g fiber, 13g sugars, 19g protein -- POINTS® value 8*

PER SERVING (one wrap without sauce): 400 calories, 7g fat, 590mg sodium,
63g carbs, 5g fiber, 5g sugars, 19g protein -- POINTS® value 8*

Hmmmm... The stats aren't bad and the chicken's nice and fresh, but there's
little to nothing that makes this wrap "Asian." We'd take it and spritz some
Newman's Own Asian Sesame spray dressing on it. But is it really worth the
effort? Uhhh... probably not.

HG Bottom Line: Only worth it if there are no other reasonable choices
around.
