Hungry Girl Today: 7.23.10

Love bagels? Hate high calorie counts? Take notes from our awesome list of bagel-related info... Breakfast is saved!

HG's Best-In-Dough Bagel Tips

When in doubt, hollow it out! If you're out and about (okay, we'll stop rhyming now), in need of food, and faced with ginormous bagels, get picky. As in use your fingers to pick out and discard the inside of that giant starchy bagel. Then stuff the thing with some of the no-guilt items mentioned next...

Use guilt-free toppers! Bagels can be fairly high in calories to begin with, so you want to be really careful with what you slap on top. If you're at home, go for low-sugar preserves or sugar-free jam (like the kinds by Smucker's and Polaner), light whipped butter or light buttery spread (we LOVE Brummel & Brown), The Laughing Cow Light cheese wedges... All great. If you're out, stick to small amounts of items like these: light or fat-free cream cheese, jam, egg whites, and smoked salmon. And fresh veggies are ALWAYS good -- bring on the tomato, cucumber, and onion slices!

When placing an order, say "Just a schmear!" Most places PILE on the cream cheese; so even if you choose the lower-calorie kind, you could wind up with more calories than you bargained for. P.S. If the word "schmear" isn't in your vocabulary, "just a little" works too!

Find the right bagel. When you're at the store, don't just grab the first round carbohydrate with a hole in the middle! Check nutritional info and look for bagels that are high in fiber with reasonable calorie counts. To make it easy for you...

Fun Bagel-Inspired Find!

Bagel Spice - This no-salt seasoning mix is really delicious. It's chock-full of all the stuff that tops an everything bagel: dried minced onion, garlic, sesame seeds, and more. So you can cover a plain low-cal bagel (or other light bread-y item) with your guilt-free spread of choice, and then sprinkle it with this seasoning blend for an everything-bagel fix! Or get creative and use the stuff in recipes to make EVERYTHING taste like everything bagels: egg scrambles, dips, slaws, salads... A-MAZING!!!! (P.S. There are no stats because the product contains a negligible amount of calories. Nice!) It's not a supermarket staple just yet, so order some online (oooh, free shipping).
