ASK

Hey there, HG!

What are your favorite low cal/low point chocolate bar or cookie snacks? I'm
getting a little bored with my regulars.

Chocolate Lover

Dear Chocolate Lover,

WOW! I'm not a chocolate freak at all, but I've got a lot of go-to chocolate
options when I crave the stuff. Ready? I'm just going to rattle them off. For
chocolate candy I go for CocoaVia Bars (80-100 calories, 2 points),
Hershey's Sticks (60 calories, 1 point), Gayle's Miracles Truffles (30 calories
each, 1.5 points for TWO), or a few small Tootsie Rolls (6 midgees = 160
calories, 3 points). For a chocolate cake or muffin fix, I ALWAYS reach for
VitaTops or VitaBrownies (1 point, high fiber, healthy 100 calories). For
crunchy/cookie-like treats I recommend 100 Calorie Packs Oreo Thin Crisps
(100 calories, 2 points) and Pepperidge Farm 100 Calorie Goldfish in
chocolate graham (100 calories, 2 points). Some fun bar options are Kashi's
GoLean Chocolate Peanut Bliss bar (180 calories, 3 points) and Pria Nutrition
Bars in Chocolate Peanut Crunch and Mint Chocolate Cookie (110 calories, 2
points). There you go. These should keep your chocolate cravings at bay --
at least for a little while. And remember, your best bet is to try to limit any
chocolate snacking to a few times a week at most.

Hi, HG!

I'm going on a cruise soon and I'm very worried about the amount of food
that'll be on the ship with all the buffets and meals. What can you
recommend so I am not constantly eating on this trip? What are the best
things to take from the buffet tables? Also, what alcoholic drinks have the
fewest calories? Thanks!

Cruisin' Susan

Dear Cruisin' Susan,

I've been on cruises and I know the harsh reality of what they're all about.
Eating is definitely a major part of a cruise. And all the rumors are true --
there are usually multiple buffets at all times of the day (and night). But this
isn't necessarily a bad thing. Don't worry about constantly eating on the ship.
The truth is, you WILL likely be constantly eating while on board. The key
here is to take advantage of the lovely food spreads they'll be providing for
you. From what I can remember, every buffet will be packed with healthy
options. There's a good chance you'll be able to find crunchy cut veggies,
and sweet, juicy ripe fruit at every turn on that boat. So while some of your
pals are packing in thousands of calories at that midnight pizza party, munch
on some sliced watermelon and crunchy grapes. Trust me, it'll feel and taste
great. I'm as hungry as anyone (if not hungrier!) and I can pretty much
always find good-for-you choices that taste great at buffets. Another thing --
if you avoid all those mayo-infested, cheese 'n oil packed items, you'll feel
WAY better after you eat. And willpower will likely be less of a problem if you
remind yourself that you'll have to squeeze yourself into a bathing
suit the next morning. As for low cal cocktail choices, your best bets are
white wine (or white wine spritzers), light beer, or mixed drinks made with
calorie-free mixers like diet soda, or club soda with a twist of lemon or lime.
No worries... it'll all be ok!

CHEW ON THIS:
Today, June 14th, is National Buttermilk Biscuit Day. Not sure why we're
telling you that, though. Each tiny one likely contains over 200 calories and
10g of fat! Not worth it.
