NEWS

Feelin' Fruity...
Lots of fruit news this week, people...

Pears: They're Fiber-ific! - Pears are getting an extra nutritional nod from the
FDA this week -- the soon-to-be published info about 'em will show that they
contain 50% more fiber. Instead of 4g, a medium pear now packs in 6g (FYI,
they contain more fiber than any other fruit).

Ice-Cold Watermelon is Less Nutritious - Apparently, watermelons stored at
room temperature contain more nutrients than refrigerated or freshly picked
melons. A recent study found watermelons that had been stored for a while
(7-10 days) had way more lycopene and beta carotene (the good stuff!) than
chilled or freshly picked ones. Watermelons continue to produce nutrients
after they're picked, and chilling slows down this process. So buy your melon
and stare at it for a few days before biting into it!

Kiwi ROCKS! - A study in New Zealand found that eating kiwi daily, along
with increased physical activity, led to an increase in the repair of damaged
DNA. It has also been reported that kiwi can help with blood clotting and may
offer protection from strokes. There's a U.S. kiwifruit tour going on now.

Stir Your Caffeine Goodbye!

Ready for do-it-yourself decaf? It's very possible that sometime in the near
future, you'll be able to take a small wand-like stick (think tongue depressor)
and stir up to 70% of the caffeine right out of the cup! The concept is simple.
Caffeine-seeking polymers coat the stick, and they grab and pull the "hyped-
up" caffeine molecules out of the drink. Sounds like some sort of weird,
impossible, futuristic gadget, but we hear these things are actually being
manufactured and tested. Who knows, these kooky sticks may soon start
showing up at restaurant tables right next to the Splenda and milk!

Tea-rific New Products
Tea time...

Gold Peak From Coca-Cola - These premium, ready-to-drink iced teas come
in five varieties -- Sweetened, Unsweetened, Lemon, Diet and Green Tea.
They're really promising a lot here. A spokesperson for the company
explains, "We make it for those who love great iced tea, and it delivers a
taste so balanced and delicious it reminds you of the best glass of tea you've
ever had."

Snapple "Good For You" Premium Green Teas - Made with less sugar than
regular iced teas, these good-for-you teas are said to boost metabolism.
They're available in Original, Mango and Asian Pear and each bottle packs in
55mg of the antioxidant EGCG. Coming in August.

The Buzz...

Having trouble with the old willpower thing? You may want to hook yourself
up with a Shockolate Vault jar. This wacky thing locks up your fattening
snacks and actually gives you a shock when you try to open it. We're sure
the shock isn't anything truly dangerous, but the jar does come with a
warning not to use it on children or people with heart problems. Seems more
like a novelty gift to us -- but it's still kind of amusing. ***Wanna eat less at
mealtime? Use smaller spoons and forks. New research shows that people
who use large utensils end up eating more. Maybe that cute Hello Kitty
flatware isn't such a bad idea after all... ***The government is really pushing
for people to eat more fruits and veggies. They're ditching the old "5 a Day"
slogan for the snappy "Fruits and Veggies -- More Matters." Ok, maybe not
so snappy, but you get the point. That's all we've got. HG out!
