GIRLS BITE OUT
Calorie-free foods aren't really our thing (they often scare us), but we took
these out for a spin. See how they fared...
Miracle Noodles
(1/3 bag: 0 calories, 0g fat, 3g carbs, 3g fiber, 0g sugars, 0g protein = 0
Points)
What We Think of 'Em: As you know, we're completely OBSESSED with
House Foods Tofu Shirataki noodles. Since they're hard to locate, we get
TONS of emails about alternative forms of diet-friendly Japanese noodles,
like Miracle Noodles. The big difference is that Miracle Noodles, which are
made of the same yam flour as the Tofu Shirataki, DON'T contain any tofu.
The good news is, the lack of tofu makes these noodles CALORIE-FREE. The
bad news is, they sort of taste like they have no calories. Here's the deal
with them. The spaghetti, fettuccini and angel hair shaped ones are really
pretty good, and actually hold onto sauces better than Tofu Shirataki. But
the other shapes -- like the thicker noodles and lasagna noodles -- are a bit
scary and get a thumbs down from us. (Avoid these unless you plan on
auditioning for Fear Factor. They might come in handy for that.) In general,
these noodles are more rubbery than Tofu Shirataki and much harder to
chew than regular noodles, so be warned. But remember, they are CALORIE-
FREE. So if you can learn to enjoy them, they could become an AWESOME
addition to your diet.

Would We Eat Them Again? Sure. But only the thinner shaped ones. We
wouldn't wish the thicker ones on our hungriest enemy.
Overall Score: 7.5. We'd eat these or other plain shirataki noodles if the tofu
ones were MIA.
Walden Farms Caramel Dip
(2 tbsp: 0 calories, 0g fat, 20mg sodium, 0g carbs, 0g fiber, 0g sugars, 0g
protein = 0 Points)
What We Think of It: We get a lot of emails about Walden Farms calorie-free
products, and quite frankly we're DYING to find one we like. We've likely
spent over $200 buying, trying and tossing disappointing jars of sauces,
spreads and dressings. When we heard that their new caramel dip was
getting fairly good reviews from dieters, we were excited to try it. The jar
looked nice, the color was right on, and it even smelled pretty good (more
like butterscotch than caramel, but pretty good nonetheless). Then we
dipped our lovely Fuji apple slices into it. What a disappointment that
was...the sauce is thin, syrupy and VERY artificial-tasting. And after
consuming about a teaspoon of it each, we felt kind of queasy. Sadly, the
apples were WAY better alone.
Would We Eat It Again? No. Never. But we'll keep buying and trying Walden
Farms products in the hopes that one day they'll hit one out of the park.
Unfortunately, today is not that day.
Overall Score: 4. Sorry, this stuff isn't exactly inedible, but it's miles away
from good.
Millstone Coffee, Pumpkin Spice
(One 5.5-oz. cup brewed: 0 calories, <1g fat, <5mg sodium, <1g carbs, <1g
protein = 0 Points)
What We Think of It: If you read HG (and obviously you do), you know we're
cuckoo for Millstone Coffee. It totally ROCKS. So we were super-excited to
get a sneak peek (or should we say, sneak SIP) of their holiday flavors.
Their Pumpkin Spice coffee is pure pumpkin INSANITY (and we mean that in
the best way possible). Smooth, mellow and rich, this stuff tastes just
pumpkiny enough that you know it's pumpkin-flavor, but it's not fake-tasting
or overly flavored. If you're looking for more ways to get a pumpkin fix,
definitely check this stuff out. HG Tip: Let it cool, and serve it over ice with
Splenda and light vanilla soymilk or Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Breeze.
YUM!
Would We Drink It Again? Yes! We're addicted.
Overall Score: A perfect 10!

David Burke's Flavor Sprays
(2 sprays: 0 calories, 0g fat, 10mg sodium, 0g carbs, 0g protein = 0 Points)
What We Think of 'Em: We didn't know what to expect from these kitschy
little bottles of "flavor" that come in zillions of fruity and savory varieties, but
we happily tried them. Truth is, we're not quite sure how we're supposed to
use them. It's not that they taste bad; they DON'T. It's just that a serving
is 2 sprays, and that really doesn't add much flavor to what you're spraying
it on at all. And if you use more sprays, we're sure this stuff eventually
starts to have calories (probably not a lot of calories, but some). In any
case, we really don't "get" these. The butter flavor was ok, but we would
choose "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter!" spray over it any day. Some of the
fruity flavors were good, but we're not sure what to do with "pineapple
spray." The bacon flavor wasn't bad; we zapped our egg whites with it and
they sort of tasted like a bacon omelette. As for killing a chocolate craving
with a spritz of the Chocolate Fudge spray? Don't count on it. It tasted a
little too much like chewing on a "scratch 'n sniff" sticker.
Would We Use Them Again? It's not likely. They're cute and fun, but not so
functional.
Overall Score: 5. Too much sizzle, not enough steak.

HG HEADS UP!!! This email is NOT meant to encourage you to go out and
scour markets for calorie-free food. You need calories to live and should
check with your doctor or a nutrition professional for specifics about how
many you should be eating per day. We love food. And calories.
