Hi Hungry Girl,
I was so excited when I saw your Facebook poll asking who shops at ALDI… I love it there! Please, please, please give us some healthy ALDI food finds worth buying.
All About ALDI
Hi All About ALDI,
So many people weighed in to tell us they LOVE shopping at ALDI
! Confession: I’ve never actually been inside an ALDI, but I’ve heard such great things. And when I saw the results of that poll, I knew we HAD to do a Hungry Girl ALDI haul. Here are some of my favorite finds, plus interesting facts about the supermarket chain!
4 Fun Facts About ALDI
The prices are the BEST. As my podcast sidekick Mikey says, “It’s like a combination of Trader Joe’s and the dollar store!” We got tons of snacks, entrées, and more for only around $50. Bonus: If you’re not satisfied with a product, they’ll replace it AND refund your money.
You bag your own groceries… but not at the checkout line. The cashier loads your goods into your shopping cart, and you transport it over to a bagging station. A little odd, but it works!
The store-brand products look just like the originals. The Crispy Oats box is nearly identical to Cheerios. The Baker’s Corner cake mix is a dead ringer for Duncan Hines. I love how easy this makes it to find comparable products.
You need a quarter to get a grocery cart… but you get it back when you return the cart! It’s actually a pretty smart way to ensure the parking lot isn’t littered with carts. Just don’t forget to bring change!
4 Food Finds We Flipped Over
Park Street Deli Pork Burnt Ends
5 oz.: 190 calories, 3.5g total fat (1g sat fat), 720mg sodium, 21g carbs, 0g fiber, 18g sugars, 18g protein -- SmartPoints
This fully-cooked high-protein pick gets a 10 out of 10! The barbeque sauce is rich and flavorful, and the pork is tender but lean. This really tastes like something from an authentic BBQ restaurant… Delicious!
Specially Selected Mild Garlic Salsa
2 tbsp.: 10 calories, 0g total fat (0g sat fat), 200mg sodium, 2g carbs, <1g fiber, <1g sugars, 0g protein -- SmartPoints
This tomato-based salsa tastes so incredibly fresh! It’s got a thinner consistency than your average salsa, which I like… It’s more like a light sauce. And there’s a lot of garlic, but it isn’t overpowering. I’m excited to try the other salsas in this line: Mango Peach and Black Bean & Corn!
Earth Grown Meatless Italian Sausage
1 link: 140 calories, 7g total fat (1g sat fat), 560mg sodium, 7g carbs, 1g fiber, 1g sugars, 13g protein -- SmartPoints
Earth Grown is ALDI’s line of plant-based products, and this sausage is seriously good. The flavor is mild, and it has a nice meaty texture, unlike some soy sausage which tastes more like stuffing. Super versatile… I’d toss it with that garlic salsa above, and have it over stir-fried veggies! There’s also an Asian Veggie Burger in this lineup -- it’s a little soft, but the flavor is amazing!
Fremont Fish Market Wild Caught Shrimp Taco Mix
1 cup: 90 calories, 1g total fat (0g sat fat), 610mg sodium, 7g carbs, 4g fiber, 4g sugars, 13g protein -- SmartPoints
Talk about unique! With kidney beans, corn, peppers, onion, and lots of Mexican seasoning, this frozen shrimp ’n veggie find is good enough to eat as a standalone centerplate entrée -- even without taco shells! The entire package is only 180 calories. It would also be great in a salad or lettuce cups. Serve it up hot, or enjoy it chilled. Warning: It’s definitely got a kick to it!
