Question@2x Hey HG,

I frequently find myself looking for a snack… but I’m BORED with my go-tos and need some fresh ideas. Do you have any suggestions on how to make a fun snack that’s not complicated?

Answer@2x Hi LoS,

I know exactly what you're talking about, and I'm a big fan of using what I already have on hand to make a fun mid-day treat! Here are five ideas that require only three simple ingredients each…

Quickie Pizza Toast

Entire recipe: 144 calories, 4g total fat (1.5g sat fat), 423mg sodium, 17.5g carbs, 3g fiber, 3.5g sugars, 10.5g protein

Who doesn’t love a good pizza fix? Toast 1 slice whole-grain bread with 60 - 80 calories, and top with 2 tbsp. pizza sauce. Pull 1 stick light string cheese into strings, and place over the sauce. Cook in a toaster oven or air fryer at 360 degrees until the cheese is melty, about 5 minutes. (HG tip: If you don’t have pizza or marinara sauce on hand, just season up some canned crushed tomatoes with Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder!)

Mediterranean Burger Snack

Entire recipe: 162 calories, 6.5g total fat (1.5g sat fat), 480mg sodium, 12g carbs, 4.5g fiber, 1g sugars, 13g protein

Here’s a hearty plant-based snack with some fiber and protein! Cook up 1 meatless patty (100 calories or less) in a skillet over medium heat until hot and crispy on the outside, about 4 minutes per side. Spread with 2 tbsp. hummus, and top with 1 tbsp. chopped roasted red peppers. Unconventional? Sure, but it tastes great and hits the spot!

PB&J Popcorn

Entire recipe: 178 calories, 3.5g total fat (0.5g sat fat), 312mg sodium, 32.5g carbs, 7g fiber, 6g sugars, 8.5g protein

Bet you've never had popcorn like THIS! First step, pop a 100-calorie mini bag of microwave popcorn. Open the bag, and sprinkle in 2 tbsp. powdered peanut butter. Shake up the bag to distribute the PB powder. Then add 1/4 cup freeze-dried strawberries and give it another good shake. (If you prefer a sweeter flavor, choose kettle-corn popcorn!)

Avocado Toast Crackers

Entire recipe: 173 calories, 7g total fat (1g sat fat), 215mg sodium, 25.5g carbs, 6g fiber, 0.5g sugars, 3.5g protein

If you’re craving everything bagels and avocado toast but you just need something snack sized, this is a GREAT fix. Start with 2 large crispbread crackers (with 50 calories or less each). Spread 1 1/2 oz. (about 3 tbsp.) mashed avocado over the crackers, and sprinkle with 1/4 tsp. everything bagel seasoning. So good, so easy…

Ham & Swiss Stuffed Mushrooms

Entire recipe: 115 calories, 3.5g total fat (2g sat fat), 584mg sodium, 8g carbs, 0.5g fiber, 5g sugars, 12.5g protein

People need to embrace mushrooms as a snack base — they’re hearty and yummy and perfect little vehicles for tasty toppings! Place 6 medium baby bella mushroom caps (stems removed) on a baking sheet, rounded side down. Bake at 375 degrees until tender, 8 - 10 minutes. Chop 1 oz. (about 1 slice) reduced-sodium ham and mix with 2 wedges The Laughing Cow Creamy Light cheese. Blot away excess moisture from the cooked mushrooms, and top with your ham & cheese filling.

Happy snacking!
