Oct 19 2015

Spotted on Shelves...

Blue Diamond Pumpkin Spice Almonds Yes, pumpkin spice is everywhere, but hear us out. These almonds are amazing! Instead of sugary glaze, they're covered in a light dusting of sweetness and spice. An ounce (about 28 nuts) has 160 calories, 14g fat, 40mg sodium, 7g carbs, 3g fiber, 3g sugars, and 6g protein (PointsPlus® value 5*). Available at major supermarkets and convenience stores... but only for a limited time. Click to find!

Pacific Organic Unsweetened Steel-Cut Oatmeal Game changer: This is shelf-stable, ready-to-eat oatmeal... Talk about the perfect emergency snack or last-minute breakfast! Each 10-oz. container has 160 calories, 2g fat, 240mg sodium, 29g carbs, 3g fiber, 0g sugars, and 5g protein (PointsPlus® value 4*). Pacific's oatmeal line also includes a Lightly Sweetened version with 180 calories per container, plus flavored varieties with 200 - 240 calories each. Golden Island Jerky This crazy-tasty jerky has kicked things up at least four notches. It comes in flavors like Kung Pao Beef, Sriracha Pork, Korean Barbecue Pork (the best), and Grilled Barbecue Pork. Ahhh! A 1-oz. serving of those flavors has 90 - 100 calories, 2 - 2.5g fat, 300 - 410mg sodium, 8 - 11g carbs, 0g fiber, 7 - 11g sugars, and 8 - 10g protein (PointsPlus® value 2*). Chain Restaurant DOs and DON'Ts: Seasonal Edition!

Tempting fall menu items are everywhere, but the calorie counts for some of 'em are frightening! Read up, and take notes...

Corner Bakery Cafe DO: Butternut Squash & Kale Salad

So much yum, and the Cafe size has just 270 calories and 9g fat (PointsPlus® value 8*). Add chicken for just 110 calories...

Corner Bakery Cafe DON'T: The Gobbler Sandwich

770 calories and 33g fat? Lame! Ditching the cranberry mayo and stuffing brings it down to 460 calories and 13g fat... but then it's basically just a turkey sandwich.

Panera Bread DO: Ancient Grain, Arugula & Chicken Salad

Red grapes, apple cabbage slaw, citrus chicken... This salad has Hungry Girl written all over it! With the dressing, a full-sized salad clocks in at 420 calories and 14g fat (PointsPlus® value 10*). Another great option? The Roasted Turkey Cranberry Flatbread, with 300 calories and 12g fat (PointsPlus® value 8*). Yum.

Panera Bread DON'T: Butternut Squash Ravioli

We're talking 690 calories and 25g fat, not to mention 92g carbs. Besides, no sane amount of ravioli ever feels like enough. Another (perhaps more shocking) no-no? The Roasted Turkey, Apple & Cheddar Sandwich, with 730 calories and 32g fat. Pass...

Au Bon Pain DO: Harvest Turkey Salad

Cranberries, grapes, apples, walnuts, goat cheese... Ahhh! Before dressing, this salad has 440 calories and 16g fat (PointsPlus® value 11*). To slim down the stats, go for walnuts or cheese... not both. As for dressing, request the new Fat Free White Balsamic Vinaigrette: 60 calories for a big 2-oz. serving... much better than the 170-calorie Maple Walnut Vinaigrette that usually comes with this salad. Also noteworthy: the Harvest Pumpkin Soup, with 150 calories per cup (PointsPlus® value 4*).

Au Bon Pain DON’T: Roasted Vegetarian Harvest Hot Wrap

This newbie isn't on the official Fall Menu, but it does have a seasonally appropriate spin. More importantly, it's a total food faker! Eggplant, zucchini, asparagus, and spinach, all rolled up in a whole-wheat wrap -- sounds like a nutritional winner, right? WRONG! The innocent-sounding wrap packs 670 calories and 25g fat. Better bet: Make one of our delicious, low-cal wraps at home!

And that's all we've got. (Yes, really!) 'Til next time... Chew the right thing!
